Several business groups were quick to congratulate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) after news broke Thursday morning that the lawmaker had been elected Speaker of the House.
Ryan will replace retiring speaker, John Boehner (R-Ohio). Ryan's election and Boehner's departure came after much GOP infighting. However, no associations brought up the political turbulence in their congratulations to the new House speaker.
"America's business leaders are gratified that the House has elected a Speaker with a proven commitment to pro-growth policies, such as modernizing the U.S. tax code, expanding trade opportunities and limiting the size and cost of government," Business Roundtable President John Engler said.
TechNet CEO Linda Moore called Ryan a "thoughtful, dedicated public servant."
"I hope this new chapter of leadership will create a window of opportunity for action on a range of issues critical for the American economy and competitiveness," she said. "This includes international tax reform, free trade, patent reform, and high-skilled immigration reform."
National Association of Manufacturers CEO Jay Timmons said that he believes Ryan will approach his new job from "a position of integrity and compassion and with the best interests of all Americans in mind."
"In politics, it is easy to spot the differences between those who are genuine and those who are in elected office for all the wrong reasons," Timmons said. "Nothing in the government is more important than personal integrity. We can find truly good people on both sides of the political aisle, and in my view, Speaker Ryan is one of the absolute best."
U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue called Ryan "an innovative, creative, and often courageous lawmaker."
"With budget fights and debt limit increases off the table until 2017, Speaker Ryan has an opportunity to focus the full attention of the people's House on tackling some major issues that will fundamentally improve our economy," he said.
